Foreign language clubs during lunch time!

We can not pass this great idea! and great work from two teachers in Pittsburgh Concord K-5.

preschool

“This spring, it started two foreign language clubs that meet weekly at lunch and are taught by two paraprofessionals at the school — Celia O’Brien, who is a native Spanish speaker, and Jason Bhandari, a Bhutanese refugee who is native Nepali speaker.

Ms. O’Brien and Mr. Bhandari are assigned to Concord because it is a center for English as a second language, or ESL.

Of the 451 students enrolled at Concord, more than 100 are not native English speakers. Most of them speak Nepali, but other languages spoken include Spanish, Burmese, Karen, Vietnamese, French and Swahili.

“There’s a real need for the community to be aware of cultural diversity here at Concord,” principal Jessica Colbert said.” (from: www.post-gazette.com full article here: http://ow.ly/xFcol)

Can we do the same clubs in our schools? Can be possible that our principals agree with this idea?

We think we can do it!

Share your experiences with us, we are sure everybody can learn from others!

The Benefits of Using the Spanish Summer Camp to Improve Your Child’s Language Skills

Practice makes perfect, for that reason we created the Spanish Summer Camp to Improve Your Child’s Spanish Language Skills!

OFSjunio2014Once children learn Spanish, they necessarily need to practice their language skills to perfect them, and the summer time constitutes that period when little ones are more likely to forget what they have learned.

Choosing to use the Spanish summer camp can have many great advantages for his language skills, particularly if you want him (or her) to excel and have many wonderful career opportunities later. Having been specifically designed for summer time, the camp is a complex program that will allow your kid to practice what he knows already to never forget it.
Learning Spanish is, for both you and your child, a substantial time investment. Therefore, once your child acquires new language skills, it is essential to cultivate them by practicing on a regular basis. During the summer time, your child is very predisposed to forgetting everything he learned throughout the year, and this would really be a shame since he did his best to improve his Spanish language abilities. By using the activities provided in the Spanish summer camp, your child will never forget what he learned, and he will actually be capable of exercising constantly to improve his current knowledge. In this way, he will never have to go through the same lessons over and over again, and he will also become more open-minded.

OFSjulio2014
Always remember that practice makes perfect, and your child will never perfect his Spanish language skills unless he exercises what he knows already. The activities consisted in the Spanish summer camp are extremely entertaining and educative, allowing your kid to practice the alphabet, the numbers, the animals and other similar lessons by playing games and coloring pages. All activities are structured on three months (June, July and August), so he or she will constantly exercise during the entire summer time.
One of the most important advantages of using this Spanish summer camp is the simple and efficient teaching manner it approaches. You will certainly be unable to inspire him with the pleasure of learning Spanish as long as you do not make this a fun thing to do. With all games and entertaining activities from the calendar, he will enjoy learning the alphabet and all lessons, with his interest rising substantially. Moreover, the camp is specifically structured to alternate games and more educational activities, so your child will always be thrilled and excited to see what the summer has prepared for him.

OFSagosto2014
The Spanish summer camp will surely be the answer to all your problems regarding your child’s future career. As long as you make sure that your kid will follow the calendar activities properly, you can be at peace knowing that his Spanish language skills will improve over time, getting him ready to progress to the next level. Furthermore, the camp will also enable him or her to enjoy educational activities that will keep him entertained whilst allowing him to become more knowledgeable and mature from early times. With such a rich source of information, your child will have more doors to open in the future, and he will be able to understand life better at the same time.

We like to invite you to use our summer camp calendar, and let us know if you have any question or concert, is free and each calendar has direct link to each activity, more easy for kids! Enjoy!

What do you want to be in the future?

Have you ever asked yourself what you would like to be in the future? Of course, you want to be a superhero, or perhaps a beautiful princess, but you cannot become one if you do not choose your path and find the profession to suit you. Even though there are many opportunities out there, finding the right one for you is going to be daunting. One day you want to be a doctor, the next you think about pursuing a career as a photographer. Your career is going to have a huge influence over several aspects in your future life: family, kids, and even your sense of well-being. The truth is, you have to find a profession you love – maybe you want to become a hairstylist, just like your mother, or perhaps you enjoy fixing things up, like your father.

costurera

Moreover, there are also hundreds of other possibilities that can help you become a superhero or a princess. What about becoming a handyman, just like your best friend’s father? Or maybe a successful businesswoman, like you have previously seen on a magazine cover. The secret to finding the right career to pursue is finding something – anything – that you really love doing, so you can become better at it and propel yourself forward all the time.

la enfermera

Do not be worried if making a choice seems too overwhelming – you will have plenty of time for that as you grow up. However, showing interest in a specific profession early on can allow you to become a big boy/girl faster than other kids of your age, and wouldn’t you be proud of it? Ask yourself what you want to be in the future, and do not forget that changing your goals is not a bad thing – not at all.

el panadero

“Las Profesiones” lesson is going to provide you with great ideas regarding possible professions that you can choose in the future. Once you access the lesson, you will be able to see eight different icons, the first three offering you the opportunity to learn about a couple of careers that you can pursue. Each of these three icons are part of the same chapter so to speak, presenting you a number of possible professions that you can choose, ordered alphabetically according to their Spanish name. Beyond the suggestive images, you will be able to hear how to properly pronounce every profession, and your Spanish skills will certainly improve since there are also the syllables and letters that form the name of that specific profession, as well as its English counterpart.

veterinario

Explore all professions, then enjoy the other five entertaining activities that “Las Profesiones” lesson comes with. The first, which is “Beenny’s Game,” will require you to guide Beenny the bee through the labyrinth and pass the obstacles by writing the (Spanish) name of each profession showed in the image. The next one, “Memory Game”, will require you to find the matching professions on two cards. The “Word Search Puzzle” is a little more entertaining since you will have to be very concentrate to spot all professions in the puzzle, so you should pay close attention to the arrangement of the letters. The coloring pages will probably be fun since you can print all of them and start coloring them exactly as desired; what is more, you can print them out as many times as you wish, not to mention that your Spanish language skills can also improve due to the fact that each page depicts a profession, along with its Spanish name, syllables, letters and English counterpart. The last activity, “Dunk-a-Pingu”, is similar to “Beenny’s Game”, being designed as the hangman – you have to form the Spanish name of all professions depicted on the whale using the letters on the screen. Every time you fail, the ice block will become smaller, causing the penguin to finally fall in the cold water.

secretaria

Going through the “Las Profesiones” lesson will have many advantages for you. Not only will it help you find an inspiring career to pursue in the future, but it will also allow you to learn more Spanish and improve your current language skills substantially. Your vocabulary is going to become richer, and your pronunciation abilities will also be better. Due to its large spread, Spanish can help you move a step forward towards the profession that you like most, so you can really become the superhero or princess that you have been dreaming of.

Los colores – colors lesson!

Los Colores

Learning the colors represents an important step towards enhancing Spanish language skills. “Los Colores” is a lesson that aims to help children learn all colors and enjoy a number of activities that will definitely help them understand everything in a better way while having fun. There are ten available activities to enjoy – to access them, children only have to click on one of the icons located in the main interface of the lesson.

coloract1The first activity, “Colors”, should be the first they access, as it teaches children the colors. Each color comes with a matching pen and its Spanish name written on the pen. The colors are presented gradually, and children will be able to properly pronounce them due to the fact that each color comes with an audio pronunciation. After all colors are presented, children will have to choose the correct color of the object that will be presented on the right side by clicking on the pen with the respective color.

coloract2Color Game” – “colorea las figuras” is an engaging activity that will allow children to deepen their knowledge about the colors. The activity requires them to color each object according to the name of the color presented below each one. To color them, children have to select the matching pen on the right side, then click on the object that needs to be colored in that particular shade.

coloract3Color Pages” – “páginas para colorear” is the following activity – as its name says, this activity involves ten coloring pages that present children each color, along with three objects that can be successfully colored using it and four texts: the Spanish name of the color, its syllables, its letters and, at the very bottom of each page, the English name of the color.

coloract4Word Search Puzzle”- “sopa de letras”- involves finding the Spanish name of each color in a difficult, yet extremely enjoyable word puzzle. Once children find a color, they have to click on the first letter, then advance to the last one. The color will be automatically marked as found.

coloract5Beenny’s Game” – “el juego de beenny” is the next activity; children have to guide bee Beenny through a labyrinth. To progress, they have to guide Beenny to each frog, then solve the puzzle they will be presented. The puzzle will present them with a color, and children have to select the correct letter to form its Spanish name. Once they do, Beenny will be able to advance towards the beehive.

coloract6Memory Game” – “juego de memoria” involves finding each matching pair by clicking on the cards. If children manage to find two matching pairs, the cards in question will disappear; if, on the contrary, they do not manage, the cards they have selected will turn upside down. The game will continue until they will find all pairs.

coloract7Music”- “canción de los colores” is probably the most engaging activity since children will be able to listen to a song that presents them all colors, along with various other objects that are colored with it. The song consists of both English and Spanish words, so that children will be able to sing along and have a lot of fun while learning Spanish.

coloract8Click-n-Match Pages”- “seleccione y empareje – actividad para imprimir” is an activity that permits children to match an object with its color in both Spanish and English. The pages can be printed several times by clicking on the print icon located on the right side. When printing, children can select whether to have fixed columns, included solution and a solved line by clicking on each button. To get a new printable, they only have to click on “New Printable.”

coloract9Dunk-a-pingu” – “el juego de pingu” requires children to first select a difficulty level, then write the Spanish name of each color according to the hints. To get a hint, children have to roll the mouse over the whale and they will see the color whose name they have to write. Once they know the color, they have to click on the letters that form the name of that color until the entire word is formed. They can advance to the next one by clicking “Next Word.”

coloract10Click-n-Match” – “seleccione y empareje” is the last game from the “Los Colores” lesson. To play the game, children have to match the English name of the colors with their Spanish one; first, they have to click on the Spanish name, and second, on the English one until all colors are matched.

Spanish Coloring Pages

elcuerpo humanoColoring pages constitute an excellent opportunity for all parents and teachers who want to help children learn Spanish language fast and accurately. There are sixteen categories children can choose from, including Body, Bugs, Toys, Backyard, Face, Halloween, Farm Animals, Pizza, Happy Easter, Christmas and many others. Once they select a category, children will be automatically redirected to a page where they will be able to see various elements that belong to the category in question – for example, if they select “Bugs” category, they will see various printable A4 pages with a beetle, ladybug, butterfly and other insects.
Each A4 page includes an image of the element in question, along with its English name and other three texts: the Spanish name of the element, the letters it is composed from and the syllables that form it. For example, a page presents a picture of a butterfly (which is its English name), along with its Spanish name (la mariposa), its letters (m-a-r-i-p-o-s-a) and its syllables (ma-ri-po-sa). Below these three texts, there is the English name of the element – in this case, “butterfly”.

paginas para colorear 2After selecting a category and a page, children can press the big print icon on the right side in order to print and start coloring it. By going back to the main page, children can select another category by clicking on one of the sixteen icons located under “Páginas para Colorear – Coloring Pages“.
Since these coloring pages come with so many features and benefits, all children can easily learn Spanish language while having fun. After they have supposedly learn the letters of the Spanish alphabet through all the interactive activities of El Alfabeto game, children can familiarize with them and their presence in various words that use them. This will allow them to enrich their vocabulary significantly, so that they will be able to form properly-structured sentences when their Spanish language skills will advance.
Moreover, kids can successfully learn how to read the name of each element correctly, and, apart from that, they will be able to read each syllable and improve their pronunciation substantially. By reading each word entirely, syllable by syllable and letter by letter by letter, learning Spanish will become simpler than ever.Even though some words that might more difficult than others, this will offer children a better understanding of Spanish language, as they will be able to observe that each letter is pronounced differently depending upon the word it is included within.

lacaraWhat is more, printing and coloring these pages can help children learn and memorize each word accurately, engaging them in an activity they will definitely enjoy. Children can learn everything better when the environment is friendly and they are fascinated by a thing or another, so they will not have to go through boring lessons that do not allow them to learn properly. Coloring is a pleasurable activity, and children will have the chance to practice their language skills through the correct pronunciation of the words, their syllables and letters.

Consequently, the relationship between children and their parents or teachers can improve very much, and these coloring pages can be printed as many times as desired, without a limit.

Spanish Syllables Practice Game!

silabas juegoThe Syllables Practice Game is an online activity that allows children to use what they have learned from the Syllables lessons in order to improve their understanding of syllables and forming words using them.

The practice game is available only for syllables ba – be – bi – bo – bu and ma – me – mi – mo – mu, and once children access one of these groups of syllables, they will be able to click on the icon with the spider located right below the arrow buttons.

This will allow them to access the game. The interface is extremely easy to navigate and comprehend, with proper instructions and imagery to allow children to understand the purpose of the game. There are three difficulty levels (easy, medium and hard), and two time options – “endless,” which permits children to practice syllable lessons endlessly, and “minute to win,” which gives them one minute to complete the game and win it. Children can adjust these settings per their wishes or skills, and clicking on the “Play” button will then run the activity.

silaba game araña2Once the game starts, a bowl with crackers will appear, and a spider will come down in order to take one. Each cracker includes a word using one syllable belonging to the selected group, which is missing. Clicking on the cracker will allow children to listen to the pronunciation of the word, and the select one of the syllable in order to complete it.

On the right side of the game interface there are five circles, which equal the exact number of syllables available in one group. Once the spider comes down to “steal” a cracker, children have to listen to the pronunciation of the word, then take the correct syllable on the right and drag it to the cracker in question. If their answer is right, the spider will drop the cracker back in the bowl; if, on the contrary, the answer is wrong, the spider will take the cookie and another spider will come down.
The bar located on the top of the screen indicates, from left to right, the difficulty level, the score and the number of wrong attempts from a total of five. Once children reach that number, the game is over, and they can restart it by simply clicking on the “X” button located in the right upper corner of the game interface.

silabas todas

The Syllables Practice Game constitutes an excellent manner to help children improve their language skills and learn syllables in a more engaging way. After going through the Syllables lessons, they can easily use their knowledge in order to stop the spiders from eating the crackers – an activity they will definitely be

determined to win and master. Once they manage to pass the “Easy” difficulty level, they will be able to advance to “Medium” or even “Hard,” which will make the game more complicated since the speed of the spiders become significantly greater.

Syllables are essential for learning Spanish language, so practicing them through this game will transform the lesson in an engaging activity that will captivate children’s attention and will permit them to develop their current language skills to proceed to the next level.

Tareas y habilidades de estudio – Homework and Study skills

by Jeanne Kraus – Reading / Curriculum Specialist – Margate Elementary School.

studio2

_________________________________________________________

studio11. Write down assignments in a notebook. Write when it’s due. Use a calendar to plan projects.

2. Use self-stick notes to attach to books he needs for homework. This will remind him what to take home.

3. File papers. Include an area in each folder for finished and unfinished assignments.

4. Make “to do” lists. Model it as a parent and make one for each study time. The child crosses off each item as it is completed.

5. Pack backpack at night and put it by the door.

6. Break long projects into small parts. Write them on the calendar.

7. Set up a study spot. Quiet. Well-lit. Hang up a “Do Not disturb” sign. No visitors, phone calls.

8. Choose a place comfortable or your child. Some work best in their room; others are too distracted.

9. Area to work in must be neat. School supplies should be well-stocked in a box.  Pencils, rulers, paper, sharpener, dictionary etc.

10. Encourage your child to study in the same place every day.

11. Study when child is most alert. It is best to study at the same time every day. Set your schedule every day.

12. Study the hardest subjects first.

13. Set a required working time so your child does not rush through assignments. Then they can read during rest of time. (Grades 1-3, 10-30 minutes per day; Grades 4-6, 30-60 minutes per day)

14. It is okay to play quiet classical music. Some kids find it helps them to concentrate. The TV should be off.

It is important to be organized in other parts of life too. This will help with schoolwork. For example, make sure your child has specific places to keep his things. Limit TV watching by helping your child make a plan of which shows to watch.

Be sure to incorporate familiar routines into your day. Sitting down to dinner together is important; a regular bedtime is very important as is a good breakfast. Children should have regular responsibilities around the house to perform. Make sure all of his responsibilities are taken care of before bedtime. Last, encourage extracurricular activities, but remember; school comes first!!

How can you help?

Be a model, o example, use a calendar and refer to it often. Reward orderliness.

Help your child learn to organize by letting him help organize a trip to the store, or a birthday party. Use a timer if your child has trouble sticking to a schedule.

Bouncing Game, a true Spanish Alphabet tutor!

bouncinggameLearning a new language at any age requires full understanding of that language’s alphabet. Bouncing game is designed to simplify the process by engaging children in a letter game. Kids are always awestruck by simple games with bright colors. And since Spanish has become a trendy choice of language that each global citizen desires to learn and speak, the bouncing game delivers effectively. Learning this adorable and romantic linked language has become easier with a plethora of websites emerging each day offering lessons. If you desire your kid to grow up knowing more than one language then let him/her engage with this simple online game.

The game is well developed and has a cool user interface brightly colored in an eye catchy way. The colors are finely blended to immediately draw the kid’s attention and develop interest. Playing this bouncing game is straightforward and has proved to effectively enhance the kid’s understanding of Spanish alphabet. Just click on the icon denoted as bouncing game with capital letter “M” at the bottom.

m bouncingWhat enthralls enough is how the letter “M” is in constant motion, bouncing up and down and in a clockwise direction and flips horizontally reverting to its original position before landing. This goes on until you click to play the game.

Once you click to play the game you get to choose a suitable level. If your kid is playing it for the first time, there is the easy level and slowly she/he can progress to medium and finally hard. Bouncing game is colorful and each level at the start of the game can be seen in some cyan color while the easy level button remains purple since the mouse is on it first. Once you choose the level you want to play, it plays some good sounds after choosing the level and pressing the start button.

Playing the game is quite fun since the Spanish alphabet letters appear to be falling from a tall building and there is a trolley like mouse movable at the floor. Once the letter is falling, you move the trolley so that they do not fall on the ground. Once the letter hits the trolley, its’ pronunciation follows in a smooth clear voice making understanding an easy task. You should try and let it hit the trolley twice to hear the pronunciation twice before letting the letter disappears to the right hand side. If you let it hit once and then let it fall down the next time you lose a point. Sounds are heard as the letter hits the trolley, when it falls on the floor which indicates a lost point and when it disappears to the right side.

The difference between the 3 levels is, when playing easy the letter are in a slow motion but medium the speed is enhanced and as you reach hard, the letters come at a relatively higher speed and not one but many letter at least 3 letters per fall. Bouncing Game helps kids learn Spanish letter pronunciation fast and accurately since there is audio playing that also improves the kid’s accent. Moreover, it advances the kids mastery in pronouncing the letters. Let your kid learn Spanish the easy faster way.
