Why Repetition Is the Mother of Skill?

bingo bilingue
Why is it that when you are teaching children, especially toddlers that repetition is the mother of skill? The answer is quite simple. If the child hears something often enough, it will be committed to memory.

When it comes to learning a language the principle is the same. It could be as simple as saying the same words every day to reading the same story at bedtime. Whatever the method is, the child will learn through this auditory method. That is why many children that grow up in a family that speak more than one language, tend to learn so quickly.

Every day, a child learns something new. For them this can be a rather scary thing, they find comfort in the repetition as they know what exactly is coming next so a simple conversation every morning is something that they will look forward to. It could be something as simple as:
¡Hola!  ¿Cómo estás? – Hello! How are you?

lacara

Repetition is the mother of skill; remember that the aim is to get the child to learn the basics of the language. Setting that solid foundation will do a lot for the child. It will not only help to build their confidence but they will be learning a lot as well. They will feel as if they have mastered what you have been practicing with them each day and will say it when they see you. This of course is the perfect opportunity to take the lesson a little further and put in some more basic words.

Bear in mind to use the words that are relevant to the situation so that they learn when it is appropriate to say it as well. It cannot be said enough, repetition is the mother of skill. So the conversation can move from ¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás? – Hello! How are you? To ¿Tienes hambre? – Are you hungry?
¿Qué quieres comer? – What do you want to eat? And so on…
Many parents may not realize what they are doing when they do this but they are actually building the comprehension skills of the child and feeding that desire to learn. Research has been done which has shown that repetition is the best way for a child to learn. Repetition also allows the child to get the pronunciation of the word correctly.
Putting the basic Spanish words in a song is a fantastic idea as that really gets the child’s attention. It could be numbers from one to ten (uno a diez) or colors or animals. What works really well in that situation is that if in addition to the auditory lesson, a visual of what is being said is added as well. After a while the child will have mastered that and can move on to more advanced words and phrases. Remember that repetition is the mother of skill.

si esta alegre ahora

The process does not take a lot of time. It could be as short as ten minutes in the morning and ten minutes before bedtime. The key is to keep things exciting and you will soon see why repetition is the mother of skill. It applies to everything we learn and for a child to learn basic Spanish words it is no different.

The Benefits of Using the Spanish Summer Camp to Improve Your Child’s Language Skills

Practice makes perfect, for that reason we created the Spanish Summer Camp to Improve Your Child’s Spanish Language Skills!

OFSjunio2014Once children learn Spanish, they necessarily need to practice their language skills to perfect them, and the summer time constitutes that period when little ones are more likely to forget what they have learned.

Choosing to use the Spanish summer camp can have many great advantages for his language skills, particularly if you want him (or her) to excel and have many wonderful career opportunities later. Having been specifically designed for summer time, the camp is a complex program that will allow your kid to practice what he knows already to never forget it.
Learning Spanish is, for both you and your child, a substantial time investment. Therefore, once your child acquires new language skills, it is essential to cultivate them by practicing on a regular basis. During the summer time, your child is very predisposed to forgetting everything he learned throughout the year, and this would really be a shame since he did his best to improve his Spanish language abilities. By using the activities provided in the Spanish summer camp, your child will never forget what he learned, and he will actually be capable of exercising constantly to improve his current knowledge. In this way, he will never have to go through the same lessons over and over again, and he will also become more open-minded.

OFSjulio2014
Always remember that practice makes perfect, and your child will never perfect his Spanish language skills unless he exercises what he knows already. The activities consisted in the Spanish summer camp are extremely entertaining and educative, allowing your kid to practice the alphabet, the numbers, the animals and other similar lessons by playing games and coloring pages. All activities are structured on three months (June, July and August), so he or she will constantly exercise during the entire summer time.
One of the most important advantages of using this Spanish summer camp is the simple and efficient teaching manner it approaches. You will certainly be unable to inspire him with the pleasure of learning Spanish as long as you do not make this a fun thing to do. With all games and entertaining activities from the calendar, he will enjoy learning the alphabet and all lessons, with his interest rising substantially. Moreover, the camp is specifically structured to alternate games and more educational activities, so your child will always be thrilled and excited to see what the summer has prepared for him.

OFSagosto2014
The Spanish summer camp will surely be the answer to all your problems regarding your child’s future career. As long as you make sure that your kid will follow the calendar activities properly, you can be at peace knowing that his Spanish language skills will improve over time, getting him ready to progress to the next level. Furthermore, the camp will also enable him or her to enjoy educational activities that will keep him entertained whilst allowing him to become more knowledgeable and mature from early times. With such a rich source of information, your child will have more doors to open in the future, and he will be able to understand life better at the same time.

We like to invite you to use our summer camp calendar, and let us know if you have any question or concert, is free and each calendar has direct link to each activity, more easy for kids! Enjoy!

What do you want to be in the future?

Have you ever asked yourself what you would like to be in the future? Of course, you want to be a superhero, or perhaps a beautiful princess, but you cannot become one if you do not choose your path and find the profession to suit you. Even though there are many opportunities out there, finding the right one for you is going to be daunting. One day you want to be a doctor, the next you think about pursuing a career as a photographer. Your career is going to have a huge influence over several aspects in your future life: family, kids, and even your sense of well-being. The truth is, you have to find a profession you love – maybe you want to become a hairstylist, just like your mother, or perhaps you enjoy fixing things up, like your father.

costurera

Moreover, there are also hundreds of other possibilities that can help you become a superhero or a princess. What about becoming a handyman, just like your best friend’s father? Or maybe a successful businesswoman, like you have previously seen on a magazine cover. The secret to finding the right career to pursue is finding something – anything – that you really love doing, so you can become better at it and propel yourself forward all the time.

la enfermera

Do not be worried if making a choice seems too overwhelming – you will have plenty of time for that as you grow up. However, showing interest in a specific profession early on can allow you to become a big boy/girl faster than other kids of your age, and wouldn’t you be proud of it? Ask yourself what you want to be in the future, and do not forget that changing your goals is not a bad thing – not at all.

el panadero

“Las Profesiones” lesson is going to provide you with great ideas regarding possible professions that you can choose in the future. Once you access the lesson, you will be able to see eight different icons, the first three offering you the opportunity to learn about a couple of careers that you can pursue. Each of these three icons are part of the same chapter so to speak, presenting you a number of possible professions that you can choose, ordered alphabetically according to their Spanish name. Beyond the suggestive images, you will be able to hear how to properly pronounce every profession, and your Spanish skills will certainly improve since there are also the syllables and letters that form the name of that specific profession, as well as its English counterpart.

veterinario

Explore all professions, then enjoy the other five entertaining activities that “Las Profesiones” lesson comes with. The first, which is “Beenny’s Game,” will require you to guide Beenny the bee through the labyrinth and pass the obstacles by writing the (Spanish) name of each profession showed in the image. The next one, “Memory Game”, will require you to find the matching professions on two cards. The “Word Search Puzzle” is a little more entertaining since you will have to be very concentrate to spot all professions in the puzzle, so you should pay close attention to the arrangement of the letters. The coloring pages will probably be fun since you can print all of them and start coloring them exactly as desired; what is more, you can print them out as many times as you wish, not to mention that your Spanish language skills can also improve due to the fact that each page depicts a profession, along with its Spanish name, syllables, letters and English counterpart. The last activity, “Dunk-a-Pingu”, is similar to “Beenny’s Game”, being designed as the hangman – you have to form the Spanish name of all professions depicted on the whale using the letters on the screen. Every time you fail, the ice block will become smaller, causing the penguin to finally fall in the cold water.

secretaria

Going through the “Las Profesiones” lesson will have many advantages for you. Not only will it help you find an inspiring career to pursue in the future, but it will also allow you to learn more Spanish and improve your current language skills substantially. Your vocabulary is going to become richer, and your pronunciation abilities will also be better. Due to its large spread, Spanish can help you move a step forward towards the profession that you like most, so you can really become the superhero or princess that you have been dreaming of.

Earth Day and Language Skills – Children Learn How to Protect the Environment in an Engaging Way

dia de la tierra1

Día de la Tierra (Earth Day) is one of the most complex and helpful Spanish lessons within “Holidays and Celebrations” chapter, bringing a number of engaging activities for both children and adults who want to learn more about this international event. Thankfully, these activities can help all children understand the importance of our environment, allowing them to walk away having greater knowledge regarding the most appropriate ways to protect the earth against pollution and other harmful factors.
The first activity, “Earth Day”, enables children to successfully remove all trashy items, including cans and bottles, which contribute to polluting the environment at a great deal. Once all items are banished, children will be able to see 12 images that depict several concepts and items related to the environment, including recycling, a soda can and a bin. By clicking on each image, they will be able to see the English name of the item in question, followed by the pronunciation of its Spanish name and, finally, the syllables that form it.
dia de la tierra2“Go Green” is the second and most helpful activity, which comes with plenty of ideas and tips on living a green life to protect Earth’s natural environment. By clicking on each image, children will be able to see these tips in both English and Spanish version, and the small audio icon next to them will allow them to hear the Spanish version being pronounced. Not only will they understand the importance of going green, but they will also be able to improve their Spanish language skills substantially.
The “Memory game” activity incorporates the classic memory game within it, but the only difference is that the cards will display environment-related images and graphics. Furthermore, “Dunk-a-Pingu” aims to test children’s understanding of protecting the environment, such as recycling, prior to the Earth Day. This activity is basically a hangman-style game, as children have to select the right letters in order to form the Spanish name of the image depicted on the whale. Not selecting the right letter will determine the ice block on which Pingu stays to break, until he will fall in the cold water.

There are, of course, many other excellent activities for those children who want to learn more about the Earth Day. “Beenny’s Game” requires kids to guide Beenny the bee through the labyrinth and solve all challenges in order to progress. The “Word Search Puzzle” activity involves searching specific words that are Earth-related within a square of letters, whilst the “Recycling Game” requires kids to sort items in the correct recycling bins. The more items they sort correctly, the bigger their score will be. Moreover, the “Coloring Pages” are printable, depicting several items that are highly related to Earth’s natural environment.

dia de la tierra

Each activity within “Día de la Tierra” lesson will increase awareness, allowing children to learn about the best practices involved within protecting the Earth from pollution and other factors that might damage it. All activities are very engaging, and they can even improve kids’ Spanish language abilities, permitting them to develop a cultural sense that can manifest later in their lives positively, determining them to act against pollution and support Earth Day.

Why bilingual skills and multicultural education are important and how can they influence the future of our kids?

kids_worldIn today’s world, people’s values revolve around education, which is known as an efficient door opener for many excellent opportunities. Being a bilingual individual with a multicultural education is of utmost importance, particularly because these capacities can allow individuals to join the extensive job marketplace and set up successful careers, as well.

However, people might experience confusion when referring to bilingual capacities and multicultural education. What are, for sure, the advantages and how can this help our children strive for a better career in the nearby future?

In the first place, being a bilingual involves speaking two distinct languages: your mother language, and a foreign one, which comes from a different region of the world. However, speaking a language involves immersing yourself in the cultures and traditions of that particular country, unavoidably acquiring a better education. At this time, most employers are seeking individuals who can speak more than two languages, offering high-paying jobs that ensure them of an excellent monthly income.

Furthermore, whether we talk about the job of a simple employer or a CEO, individuals can receive new opportunities when their education is beyond regular limits, enabling them to be promoted to higher levels.

multicultural 3Being a bilingual is ideal due to the fact that you will need good communication skills when talking to a potential client, let’s say, from China, who can speak only in his mother language, Chinese. An individual who is able to understand the language will be able to establish efficient communication with the client, leading not only to appreciation, but also to new perspectives that can change their lives’ forever, promising a better future.

In addition, multicultural education enables individuals to improve the communication and understanding between them and people who come from other countries of the world. Once you are aware of their traditions, you will know how to act properly in order to attain your goals. Multicultural education can influence kids’ future at a great deal due to the fact that they are basically able to familiarize with other cultures, understand them and use their knowledge in order to lay the foundation of a promising career.

From the very first moments, those children with enhanced education can be selected to take part in several programs, and students might be offered the possibility of studying abroad, where the rules are different and their opportunities – more numerous. Being properly educated can allow kids to focus on their beliefs and develop important aspects of their personality.

multicultural 1

Multicultural educations enables them to pick their own religion, principles and way of life, and concentrate on particular fields they might be interested in, such as information technology, business, entrepreneurship, and so on. Moreover, multicultural education can open new doors, as they will learn the basics of a successful career and other aspects pertaining to it.

Before thinking about anything else, you should definitely consider becoming a bilingual and providing multicultural education to your child in order to offer him the benefits we mentioned above. Doing proper research can help you gain a better understanding of the complexities involved in this matter, so it is better to equip yourself with patience and proper knowledge regarding how to help your kids prosper.

Tareas y habilidades de estudio – Homework and Study skills

by Jeanne Kraus – Reading / Curriculum Specialist – Margate Elementary School.

studio2

_________________________________________________________

studio11. Write down assignments in a notebook. Write when it’s due. Use a calendar to plan projects.

2. Use self-stick notes to attach to books he needs for homework. This will remind him what to take home.

3. File papers. Include an area in each folder for finished and unfinished assignments.

4. Make “to do” lists. Model it as a parent and make one for each study time. The child crosses off each item as it is completed.

5. Pack backpack at night and put it by the door.

6. Break long projects into small parts. Write them on the calendar.

7. Set up a study spot. Quiet. Well-lit. Hang up a “Do Not disturb” sign. No visitors, phone calls.

8. Choose a place comfortable or your child. Some work best in their room; others are too distracted.

9. Area to work in must be neat. School supplies should be well-stocked in a box.  Pencils, rulers, paper, sharpener, dictionary etc.

10. Encourage your child to study in the same place every day.

11. Study when child is most alert. It is best to study at the same time every day. Set your schedule every day.

12. Study the hardest subjects first.

13. Set a required working time so your child does not rush through assignments. Then they can read during rest of time. (Grades 1-3, 10-30 minutes per day; Grades 4-6, 30-60 minutes per day)

14. It is okay to play quiet classical music. Some kids find it helps them to concentrate. The TV should be off.

It is important to be organized in other parts of life too. This will help with schoolwork. For example, make sure your child has specific places to keep his things. Limit TV watching by helping your child make a plan of which shows to watch.

Be sure to incorporate familiar routines into your day. Sitting down to dinner together is important; a regular bedtime is very important as is a good breakfast. Children should have regular responsibilities around the house to perform. Make sure all of his responsibilities are taken care of before bedtime. Last, encourage extracurricular activities, but remember; school comes first!!

How can you help?

Be a model, o example, use a calendar and refer to it often. Reward orderliness.

Help your child learn to organize by letting him help organize a trip to the store, or a birthday party. Use a timer if your child has trouble sticking to a schedule.

Syllables Lessons – Learn more Spanish everyday!

Las Sílabas, or the Syllables, is a group of lessons that aims to help children learn Spanish language through learning all syllables that help them form words.

Once this lesson is accessed, children can select the group of syllables to learn from the list they are provided with, which includes:

menusilabas

Selecting one of the previously-mentioned group of syllables will automatically redirect them to the lesson in question, where children will be able to see three words using each syllable – in other words, three words using the “sa” syllable, three words using the “se” syllable and so on. Each word comes with a supporting picture, along with its corresponding English translation, to allow children to understand everything clearly and learn Spanish language fast.

dadedidoduBy clicking on the respective word, children will be able to hear various audios using the same word, as it will be pronounced several times using distinctive speeds. The first version will pronounce the entire word completely, the second one will pronounce each syllable of the word with a short pause in between all syllables, and the third one will pronounce the entire word again. Each of the aforementioned syllables is highlighted in red, which will permit children to pay closer attention to the way it is pronounced.

There are three buttons on the left – the first one shows the syllable that is actually highlighted in all three words (for example, “ma”) and clicking on it will allow children to hear its proper pronunciation; the second button is composed of four arrow buttons that offer access to all the syllables from the selected group. By clicking the right arrow, children will be able to see the next syllable, along with three corresponding words, pronunciations and supporting pictures.

The left arrow will lead them to the previous syllable, while the bottom one will present them nine sentence examples that use the words presented for each syllable.

dadedidodu1There are two examples for each word, which allow children to fully understand how to properly use each syllable, along with the meaning of each word. Using the arrow buttons further will allow them to move from a syllable to another, and from one sentence example to another.
The third button located below the arrows is the print button, which allows children to print specific words or syllables in order to practice proper pronunciation and learn each syllable without using the virtual space.
The Syllables is an essential Spanish lesson for children who want to learn this language, as they will successfully be able to form words and move a step further in improving their language skills. Since they are presented various examples of words and sentences, children are able to learn how each syllable is pronounced within different words. The interface of the lesson is children-friendly and very engaging, facilitating easy learning and entertainment at the same time and transforming everything in a pleasurable activity.

Rompecabezas de Sílabas – Slide and Find, Syllable Puzzle

We are so excited to announce our new game to help kids learn to read in Spanish, and also acquire excellent pronunciation. The Slide and Find Syllable Puzzle lets kids form words by combining syllables. This is the natural way to learn to read in Spanish.

silabas game slide
In English, children learn to read by sounding out letters. In Spanish, the consonants are combined with vowels and children learn to read syllables. They first read ma, me, mi, mo, mu and then read the syllables combined into words: mamá, mima. Next, the words are combined to form sentences: Mi mamá me mima.

In the Slide and Find Syllable Puzzle, you are combining syllables to form common words. The game consists of making a complete picture by matching the parts and at the same time combining syllables to make the word represented by the picture. When you combine the pictures to a ‘cow’, you will also combine the syllables ‘va’ and ‘ca’ to make ‘vaca’.

There is native-speaker audio for each syllable, so players can “sound out” the word the same way native speakers do as they learn to read. If the parts of the picture do not match, the sounds will not make sense. When the parts of the picture make an object, the sounds form the word. The picture serves as a visual reminder of the meaning of the word and also a way for players to self-check by forming a complete image.

rompecabezas silabas

This new game is an entertaining way for kids to learn vocabulary and also learn the sound system in Spanish. The Slide and Find Syllable puzzle teaches them reading, pronunciation and new words as they play.

Felicitaciones!

We were looking for new material to share with all of you and we have found this wonderful site “Con mi cuento encanto” as they describe themselves, “is an early childhood project whose main characteristic is based on the creation of stories by children as a result of creative sessions or workshops held in different parts of the country (Colombia). These original stories were adapted for radio and each has a musical theme itself.

There are twenty stories and twenty tracks collected in a CD to be distributed in some radio stations and public libraries, as well as other institutions related to the theme of childhood.”

All stories are wonderful, we really liked one called “La cámara loca“, this story is from a region of Colombia is called El Caquetá, but the thing that we most admire, is how the kids tell the story, additional the arrangements and the production, with music and sound effects give a real life to their stories! Congratulations!

April National Poetry Month – Manuelita la tortuga – María Elena Walsh

El poema de hoy es “Manuelita la tortuga” de la poeta y compositora argentina María Elena Walsh.

MANUELITA LA TORTUGA

Manuelita vivía en Pehuajó
pero un día se marchó.
Nadie supo bien por qué
a París ella se fue
un poquito caminando
y otro poquitito a pie.

Manuelita, Manuelita,
Manuelita dónde vas
con tu traje de malaquita
y tu paso tan audaz.
Manuelita una vez se enamoró
de un tortugo que pasó.
Dijo: ¿Qué podré yo hacer?
Vieja no me va a querer,
en Europa y con paciencia
me podrán embellecer.

En la tintorería de París
la pintaron con barniz.
La plancharon en francés
del derecho y del revés.
Le pusieron peluquita
y botines en los pies.

Tantos años tardó en cruzar el mar
que allí se volvió a arrugar
y por eso regresó
vieja como se marchó
a buscar a su tortugo
que la espera en Pehuajó.
